From a single mold came two sculptures. It was not uncommon in the early days of the studio to modify a design, assign it its own design number and then release it as a new sculpture with a new name. That is the case with this mold acquired from the Holland Mold Company. Based on the design numbers of these two sculptures being only one number apart, it is likely the two were in design at the same time. Our Lady was completed almost exactly as received from the Holland Mold Company. The halo was an addition by the studio and would be updated at least once during her production. Mystical Rose received slight modifications removing the rosary, adding a rose crown in lieu of a halo and changing the foliage on the base. Mystical Rose, a more manageable size for home display, was 3 3/4" shorter.
This full figure sculpture is found in many finishes and and with known variations in her halo. The halo bumps the overall size of this piece to an impressive 19 1/2" tall, making her the tallest sculpture Cybis produced for sale to collectors during the 1950's. The studio also produced statuary style sculptures for churches but Our Lady is the largest offered for retail consumption. One other title this sculpture holds is that it has the longest name assigned to any sculpture. "Madonna Our Lady of Lourdes Healer of the Sick" is the longest (found to date) in any published Cybis marketing material. Variations are known to also exist in the flowers at her feet. While some copies have as many as four roses, others may have only two in addition to the gold roses on her feet.
Our Lady of Lourdes was retired in the late 1950's.

The 8" bust was produced in greater numbers than the larger size. As shown above, and in subsequent pictures, it was available in Parian white, color and Stained Glass finishes. Only the 17" bust included the wooden base, which was attached.
The 17" bust shown in this marketing photo appears to be the same as the 8" bust .
This badly damaged example is missing sections from her floral crown. Even in this condition the color and softness of the piece still conveys the warmth and beauty intended.
This outstanding example in the Stained Glass color finish demonstrates the craftsmanship found in the 1950's Biblical Porcelain Art pieces produced by the Cybis Studio.
Marketing material from the time describes this finish as, "Cybis Stained Glass Porcelain is fired again and again to bring out the hushed splendor of its softly glowing color."
The mold used for Our Lady of Lourdes is the same mold used for Mystical Rose. The main difference between these two sculptures is Our Lady has a halo while Mystical Rose wears a crown of roses on some sculptures while nothing on others. Mystical Rose was released in both a full figure sculpture and a bust. The busts were released in two sizes. Mystical Rose measures 15 3/4" tall for the full figure. The large bust is 17" tall and attached to a wooden base according to printed material. The small bust measures 8" tall and is not attached to a wooden base. She was retired in the early 1960's.
