This full figure sculpture is found in many finishes and with variations to the base. Standard size is 13 1/2" tall without the base. She measures 15" tall when found with the base. Assumption was retired around 1964.
This sculpture depicts Mary being "taken up" with clouds and a sickle moon at her feet. Numerous paintings (example shown below) illustrate her assumption. In reviewing price lists it was apparent the studio mistakenly identified this piece, sculpture 2104, as Immaculate Conception. (The actual piece named Immaculate Conception is design number 251 measuring up to 18" tall with attached base.) The studio made this error on the 1963 Price List and possibly prior to that. It was then carried forward to all later publications. It is surprising the error was not caught by anyone within the Cybis Studio considering the staff size and higher percentage of adherents to Catholicism in the Trenton area in the early 1960's. It is likely the mistake was made around the time the 1963 price list was released as this was possibly one of the last years the piece was available for sale. Earlier publications were likely correct or customers purchasing the sculpture would certainly have pointed out such an error.
Others did catch and correct the error. A 1973 ad for a group of 1950's Biblical/Religious sculptures, available on the secondary market from Armstrong's Gallery in Pomona, California, correctly list both #251 as Immaculate Conception and #2104 as Assumption.
